Khandala - How to get there:
Khandala is very well connected by Road and Rail. Every train or car going towards South India from Bombay via Pune has to pass through Khandala.
By Airways:
Since Khandala does not have an airport, one has to fly to Bombay or to Pune. Nearest International Airport is Bombay and Domestic airport is Pune. Bombay international Air port is approximately 110 kms and Pune is 66 kms.
By Railways:
There are several trains available from Bombay and Pune. Also there is a continuous frequency of local trains from Pune to Lonavala.
By Roadways:
Khandala is well connected with Mumbai and Pune by road and the bus service for Pune (travel time 2½ hours) via Lonavala is good. However, it takes about four hours to reach Mumbai from Khandala. Buses shuttle between Khandala and Lonavala (15 minutes)
There are Taxis available from Dadar T.T. in Bombay and from Pune.
About
Khandala is a hill station in the Western Ghats in the state of Maharashtra, India, about three kilometers from Lonavala. Khandala is one of the important hill stations in the state of Maharashtra and is the pride of the Sahyadri Mountains. Due to the ease of accessibility from nearby cities, Khandala is a common area for hiking. One destination is the nearby peak of Dukes Nose, which offers a panoramic view of Khandala and the Bhor Ghat.
There are a number of lakes around Khandala. Tugauli Lake, Lonavala Lake and Bhushi Lake are worth visiting; so is the Walvan Dam. Karla and Bhaja Caves, located in the hills at a distance of 16 km from Khandala, are important places to visit.
These rock-cut cave temples dating back to 2nd century BC and are amongst the oldest and finest examples of Buddhist rock-cut temple art in India, belonging to the Hinayana sect of Buddhism. Adventure seekers can try their hand at rock climbing at the Dukes Nose peak and other locations in the Karla hills, near Khandala. Travelers coming from Mumbai to Khandala via the Mumbai-Pune highway can see the Dukes Nose with its peculiar peak.
